Kitty Hawk is famous for The Wright Brothers and the first flight (even if technically it was Kill Devils, North Carolina). Kitty Hawk, however, is part of the Outer Banks, which help make up part of North Carolina’s barrier islands.  You are in luck, too, because boating is one of the biggest activities on the Outer Banks, making a day trip to Kitty Hawk a perfect way to spend a day.

There is no shortage of public boat ramps along the Outer Banks. There are two specific public boat ramps for Kitty Hawk.  If you have a smaller boat, you can go to Kitty Hawk Bay.  If your boat is bigger, you can go to Kitty Hawk Public Boat Ramp (http://www.outerbanks.com/boating.html).

Dock your boat and head to the Aycock Brown Welcome Center to get oriented in this small island town.  Depending on who’s in your group, you can head to Children at Play, or maybe Kitty Hawk Cycle/Duck Cycle is more your speed.  There you can rent bikes to take around town. They will even help you map out routes and find specific places to go.

Another really unique thing that is perfect for a day trip is the Outer Banks Restaurant Tour.  They have tours that feature between four and six restaurants that are close in proximity to each other. At each restaurant you go to, you are given samples of their food and a beer or wine pairing.  It’s a really special way to get to know the local scene and experience a culinary adventure. Whether you spend your day riding bikes to museums or beaches or going on a food tour, you will love Kitty Hawk and all they have to offer!
